2.4.6 Pesticides

Pesticides are substances or mixtures that are intended to prevent, destroy, repel, or mitigate any pest. In addition, this category includes any substance or mixture intended for use as a plant regulator, defoliant, or desiccant. As a group, pesticides have the same properties and behaviors of VOCs. Contaminant flow occurs through the same mechanisms as described for VOCs.

The term pesticide is applied to literally thousands of different, specific chemical-end products. Pesticides include insecticides, fungicides, herbicides, acaricides, nematodicides, and rodenticides. There are several commonly used classification criteria that can be used to group pesticides for purposes of discussion. Conventional methods of classifying pesticides base categorization on the applicability of a substance or product to the type of pest control desired. (For example, DDT was used typically as an insecticide.)
