Environmental Protection Agency FSPLUS Overview

The FIELDS Tools for ArcView (version 3.5) are a collection of ArcView-based extensions (modules) that include Sample Design (as well as a link to Visual Sample Plan, VSP), Database Query, Geospatial Modeling and Analysis, and Human Health and Ecological Risk Assessment.

    FSPLUS - data loading
    • A dbf format is provided for tabular data.
    • FSPLUS requires specific data field names, but will prompt user to assign existing field names to the required field names if necessary.
    FSPLUS - graphic loading
    • AutoCAD dxf format for graphics.
    • Use of dxf requires AutoCAD 2000 version.dxf.
    FSPLUS - logical flow
    • Menus are arranged in order of use (Data loading, then Modeling, then Analysis).
    FSPLUS - expert knowledge
    • Knowledge of interpolation methods would be useful.
    FSPLUS - functionality
    • XY grid is simple and easy to manipulate. However, if the user attempts to go past horizontal on the grid , FSPLUS may crash.
    • At least one of the axes on the XY grid will contain a component that is labeled upside-down
    • No ability to zoom in or out.
    • Modeling grids created by FSPLUS have a propensity to detach visually from the XY grid. They will appear to detach from three sides of the XY grid and move off in odd directions, creating a sort of flap or trap-door effect. The data set used in the evaluation did not vary in depths, so it is unknown if a dataset with varying depth would act in a similar fashion.
    • 3-D modeling grids tended to contain large striations of blank space.
    • May be used as either a stand-alone software that does not require an ArcView license or as part of a software package (Fields Tools for ArcView) that requires an ArcView license.

    FSPLUS - documentation
    • Documentation explains mathematical basis of interpolations and usefulness of models for a specific situation.
    FSPLUS - output
    • FSPLUS contains a Print button that enables the user to print a screen shot to a printer, and a Save button that will save the screen view to a jpg file.
    • FSPLUS reports can be printed by either of the above methods, or the contents can be copied and pasted into Microsoft Excel.
    FSPLUS - sources
    • Version 1.5 downloaded October 18, 2004.
    • Can be downloaded simultaneously with FIELDS or as a standalone product.
