The NAVFAC T2 Five Year Program Plan identifies remaining technical challenges in the Environmental Restoration (ER) Program and guides the focus of the T2 Program in order to maintain awareness of the challenges faced by Navy Remedial Project Managers (RPMs). It reviews the T2 process, mechanisms, and products that are planned for the future and provides overall conclusions on future directions. Specific technical challenges for the ER Program are discussed related to contaminated sediments, vapor intrusion, groundwater plume management, source zone strategies, passive remediation technologies, long-term management, and incorporating optimization and sustainable practices into ongoing remediation efforts. Upcoming technical challenges for the Munitions Response Program (MRP) are also summarized.Several types of T2 products are used to communicate information to Navy RPMs about the latest technology issues and advances. The T2 Five Year Program Plan summarizes the types of T2 products that will be developed to effectively communicate new information. Multimedia Web-based tools have been developed to provide information in an interactive format. The T2 Web tools produced to date cover a wide range of technologies and contaminants. The T2 Web tools can be viewed at http://www.ert2.org and sorted by relevant contaminants, media, technologies, and phases.

Phytotechnologies use plants to remediate or contain contaminants in soil, ground water, surface water, or sediments. This document provides guidance for regulators, who evaluate and make informed decisions on phytotechnology work plans, and for practitioners, who have to evaluate remedial alternatives at a given site. This document is an update to Phytoremediation Decision Tree (PHYTO-1, 1999) and Phytotechnology Technical and Regulatory Guidance Document (PHYTO-2, 2001) and replaces the previous documents entirely. It merges the concepts of both previous documents and includes new and practical information on the process and protocol for selecting and applying various phytotechnologies as remedial alternatives. The technical descriptions of phytotechnologies in this document concentrate on the functioning mechanisms: phytosequestration, rhizodegradation, phytohydraulics, phytoextraction, phytodegradation, and phytovolatilization. Decision trees (Remedy Selection, Groundwater, Soil/Sediment, and Riparian Zone) help guide the user through the application of phytotechnologies to a remediation project.

This report represents an initial activity for the Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of Legacy Management (LM) to identify and evaluate renewable energy resources on LM-managed federal lands. The final assessment provides DOE LM with information to consider when assessing alternatives of land-reuse options for current and future LM lands. DOE LM and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) established a partnership to conduct an assessment of renewable energy resources on LM lands in the United States. The LM/NREL team used geographic information system (GIS) data to analyze and assess the potential for concentrating solar power (CSP), photovoltaics (PV), and wind power generation on LM lands. The analysis helped gauge the renewable industry's interest in pursuing renewable power development on LM Lands.

This report evaluates the results of laboratory and field tests of rigid, porous polyethylene diffusion samplers for monitoring concentrations of perchlorate and explosive compounds in ground water at Camp Edwards. The field tests were conducted near the Impact Area in 15 monitoring wells typical of the monitoring wells at the MMR known to contain various levels of these contaminants. Ground-water samples were collected from the 15 wells in 2005 by both pumped and diffusion sampling methods. The results presented in this report are intended for use in evaluating whether passive diffusion sampling is a useful alternative for long-term monitoring at the site. This study was done cooperatively by the Toxic Substances Hydrology Program of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the Impact Area Groundwater Study Program (IAGWSP) of the U.S. Army Environmental Command (USAEC).

This Issue Paper highlights at what stage of the process solid-phase characterization techniques need to be implemented during site characterization and describes two case studies (one site affected by arsenic, lead, and chromium, and the other by uranium) where the results of these techniques were critical to evaluation of MNA as a potential component of ground-water cleanup.

Remediation Technology Assessment Reports: Summary of Selected Documents (2005)
This factsheet, published by the Federal Remediation Technologies Roundtable (FRTR), identifies and summarizes selected reports prepared by federal and state agencies to assist project managers in selecting and designing remediation technologies. Remediation Technology Assessment Reports are based on practical field experience with either specific technologies (such as permeable reactive barriers) or, in a few instances, specific contaminants (such as arsenic). As of September 2005, the website http://costperformance.org/remediation provides access to 68 of these reports. The new factsheet highlights the Remediation Technology Assessment Reports that may be among the most useful to project managers. Order: EPA 542-F-05-006

Workshop on Nanotechnology for Site Remediation (2005)
Members of the Federal Remediation Technologies Roundtable held a workshop on the use of nanotechnology for site remediation in Washington, D.C., on October 20-21, 2005. The workshop served as a communication and scientific reporting forum on remediation research and technologies, as a stimulus for increased collaborations among the various researchers and government scientists, and as a forum for discussing research needs. Nanotechnology is research and technology development at the nanometer scale (one billionth of a meter) to create structures, devices, and systems that have novel properties and functions. Among the potential applications for nanotechnology are treatment technologies for environmental pollutants. View/Download conference proceedings. -
Cost & Performance Remediation Case Studies and Related Information, Fifth Edition (2004)
The remediation case study reports and technology assessments provide site-specific cost and performance information about actual technology applications at hazardous waste sites based on data provided by federal and state agencies. This CD-ROM contains 361 cost and performance case study reports describing the use of remediation technologies; 144 reports describing the use of site characterization and monitoring technologies; 73 case studies describing long-term monitoring/optimization of remediation technologies; and 54 reports describing the assessments of remediation technologies at hazardous waste sites.

Guide to Documenting and Managing Cost and Performance Information for Remediation Projects, Revised Version (1998)

The Field Sampling and Analysis Technologies Matrix
The Matrix and its accompanying Reference Guide provide project managers and site stakeholders with information for use in identifying methods involving non-intrusive or minimally intrusive technologies in order to optimize sampling locations and minimize well installation. The Matrix includes techniques and instruments that are (1) fieldable and (2) commercially available. The Reference Guide provides a description and additional background information on each technology.
